Introduction to Communication and Consultation
Aims:
- To increase competence and confidence in consulting with disabled children and young people, particularly about their views, wishes and feelings
- To introduce participants to different approaches to communication, within a clear value framework
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Recognise a wide range of communication methods as valid
- Apply the social model of disability to childrens communication
- Sign a basic introduction to a child
- Identify barriers to consultation with disabled children
- Use a range of strategies to overcome these barriers
- Seek further information and resources locally and nationally
Trainers
Charlie Orrell is a Registered Intermediaries with the Ministry of Justice, supporting children’s communication with the police and courts. Charlie is a qualified speech and language therapist. She specialises in working with children with physical and/or learning difficulties, their families and other professionals in their lives. She has a particular interest in supporting children who are non-verbal to develop alternative methods of communication.
Adam Walker works, trains and consults for Triangle and also provides IT support. Adam has been a member of Triangle's Senior Consultative Group of young people since it began, and contributed to the Two Way Street video. Adam trains on communication and consultation, advocacy and safeguarding disabled children and young people across the UK.
