Therapeutic work with disabled children
Aims:
- To increase awareness and develop skills in meeting the therapeutic needs of disabled children and young people.
Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Observe and record children’s non-verbal communication
- Use therapeutic skills in creative engagement with disabled children and young people
- Identify and reduce barriers to therapy services for disabled children and young people
- Set up clear agreements with interpreters and communicators
By the end of the course, participants will have an awareness/ working knowledge of:
- The potential impact of disability on children and young people’s attachment relationships.
- The importance of engaging with the systems around the child.
Course Applicants must be qualified social workers with some experience/prior training in therapeutic work; or qualified play /art/drama/music/integrative or child psychotherapists; psychologists or experienced workers currently undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma/MA in any of the aforementioned therapies.
Workshop Leader
Jessica is a qualified and experienced Non-Directive Play Therapist (Masters, The University of York). She is a full member of The British Association of Play Therapists. Jessica is currently undertaking her PhD in Play Therapy at The University of York. She is a tutor on the Play Therapy MA course at The University of York and undertakes research work for the Play Therapy Department. She works as a Play Therapist for CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) in East Sussex. She is also a trained Filial Therapist.
Jessica specialises in work with disabled children and those with communication difficulties and has worked for Triangle on a freelance basis for a number of years undertaking therapeutic assessments; specialised training and consultation work. Previously Jessica worked at the NSPCC in the York therapeutic team and in the Hastings Schools team.
